  1. What is NRN?

Answer: A person of Nepali origin who is residing in a foreign country after acquiring the respective country's passport and citizenship is called the NRN (Nonresident Nepali).

  1. What are the NRN rights in Nepal?

Answer: The rights of the NRN in Nepal are as follows:-

  1. The NRN has rights to their parental property.
  2. NRN has rights to the repatriation of investment and profit earned out of their investment.
  3. NRN has the right to run an industry or business and purchase or sell the property.
  4. NRN has the right of purchasing land for residential purposes.
  5. NRN has the right to a free visa for up to 10 years to Nepal so long as the NRN card remains valid and the visa is also renewable.
  6. Does Nepal Government recognize the Dual Citizenship of NRNs?

Answer: No, Nepal Government does not recognize or Nepal doesn't allow its citizens to hold dual nationality. But the Constitution of Nepal has provisions for the non-resident Nepali citizenship of nationals of other countries. Hence, a person, having NRN citizenship can enjoy economic, social, and cultural rights and work in private firms or companies but is not allowed for enjoying political rights and not allowed to join public services.

  1. How much land does an NRN own in Nepal?

Answer; AS per the recent regulation passed by the Council of Ministers, and as per the NRN Bylaws 2066, NRN can purchase two (2) Ropanies of land within Kathmandu valley, eight (8) kattha of land or house within the metropolitan cities of Terai region, and four(4) Ropanies of land in Metropolitan cities of other Districts except for the clause. The maximum of one(1) Bigha in other areas of Terai except for Clause B and a maximum of ten(10) Ropanis in other areas except for Clause A, B, C, and D. But they can only allow procuring land, houses, or apartment for their own purposes.

  1. Where should an NRN apply for land purchase in Nepal?

Answer:  To purchase land NRN must apply to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nepal. The following documents should be submitted when applying to Ministry to purchase land by NRNs which is as follows:-

  1. A photocopy of Non- Resident's Nepali identification card.
  2. A copy of each foreign citizenship certificate and passport.
  3. The registration certificate of landlords/Lalpurja and one photocopy thereof.
  4. Photocopy of landowner's (seller's) citizenship.
  5. A blueprint of trash map (including house map in case of the house buying).
  6. Duly filled form for the purchase of land.
  7. A copy of the house completion certificate.
  8. How long is it taking for land ownership to be transferred?

Answer: After the application is submitted to the Ministry of Real Estate, the Ministry will make a decision within a week to for transferred ownership for the purchase of land or house.

  1. Can an NRN inherit their parental properties?

Answer: Yes, as per the provision stated in the NRNA Bylaws 2066, their right to inheritance as per Nepali law is allowed. The Civil Code of Nepal also allows the holders of NRN Citizenship the right to inherit, own and maintain the property at par with other Nepali citizens to NRNs.

  1. What if NRN stays in Nepal?

Answer: After getting an NRN card if any foreign nationals overstay in Nepal then they will be penalized as per the laws relating to immigration. The person has to pay $3 per day plus an extra $2 per day for the extension fee. The overstay fines can be settled at any of the entry ports such as airports, land borders, and immigration offices.

  1. How NRN can extend their visa in Nepal?

Answer: A NRN can extend their visa by contacting the Department of Immigration ( NonTourist Visa Section) with following the documents it will be extended for a maximum of one(1) year and an NRN visa both at the airport and DOI is issued for free until the NRN card remains valid.

The Necessary Documents for NRN Visa Application are;-

  1. Online Application
  2. NRN card issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its missions based abroad ( Original and Photocopy)
  3. Valid Passport, and
  4. Photocopy of Passport and latest Nepalese Visa.
